Flowering Shrubs
Berberis thunbergii 'Royal Burgundy' 2 gal
The Royal Burgundy® Barberry is a tough, reliable small shrub that brings lots of color for almost no effort. It grows rapidly into a mounded plant 2 to 3 feet tall and almost 4 feet across. The small, rounded leaves begin the year a rich burgundy color, and hold it all summer, gradually becoming red-black by fall. Yellow spring flowers and red winter berries on the bare branches add seasonal interest and variety. Grow this hardy plant alone in a small bed, or in groupings in a larger one. Use it to make a low barrier along a driveway, or beneath low windows for beauty and where the sharp stem spines give security. Why settled for a week or two or flowers each year, when you can have garden color so easily for months and months with brightly colored foliage?
Bold rich burgundy to red-black foliage all season
Cold hardy and drought resistant
just 3 feet tall, perfect for smaller spaces and low hedges
Very resistant to deer and other pests
Grows well even in poor soil and urban conditions
Plant the Royal Burgundy® Barberry in full sun in any well-drained soil, even dry and difficult ones. After some regular watering when young it will thrive even in long periods of drought. It is very winter hardy too, all the way into chilly zone 3, and even deer leave it alone. It has no significant pests or diseases either, yet it looks great in every season. Trimming or pruning is not required, but it can be clipped to make a more formal low hedge is you wish.
